Comic #55

Why are there ads on the site?!??!

Well, I know I joked around about Wizard's Reprint Policy way back in the news of comic #2, but I'm a little pissed to hear that they are just reprinting Phyrexian Negator. At least last time they changed their reprint policy they had a popular vote first. They should have made an announcement or something. Well, maybe they still will. If they just give us an "Uh, Whatever" I could be bad news for us collectors. On the plus side, it might be the time to BUY some of the Power 9 if people start to panic.
Should they get just forget about the Reprint Policy? Does it matter what cards they print in FtV's and Duel Decks if they don't effect Standard? Would it be good or bad if they, for example, made Black Lotus as a FNM foil?

January Card Making Contest Results

So, for this month I thought I would bring judging of the cards up into the news. For those of you that don't know, every month I have held a card making contest. This month the theme is Rise of the Eldrazi. I also thought I would take an idea from MtGS's old card contest and judge the cards this way:

Balance: 6/10 - Well, 3/3 flyers for 4 are pretty good. I do feel like her ability is TOO good, as in, overpowered. On defense it becomes even more powerful since you can steal one of their attacking guys and block with it. I feel like the ability should only be usable as a sorcery, to fit in with red's philosophy better, or make you discard a card as well, to make it more balanced.
Flavour: 8/10 - Making the ability instant speed hurts you here. Red gets Threatens not Ray of Commands. Other than that I like the flavor of this card. Jules did, after all, take control of Elf Kid.... or did he take control of her? Hard to say, but I'll give it to you.
Creativity: 2.5/5 - It seems a lot like Overtaker. I will give you an "average" here. Nothing that's really new, but nothing that's really a copy of another card.
Quality: 4/5 Not a big fan of the square set symbol, but everything else looks good.

Balance: 6/10 - Again, maybe I'm not up for the powercreep of creatures, but a 6/4 flyer for 6 mana plus a resurrection ability seems too good. With the cheapest reanimater in standard costing 5, getting a 6/4 body attached to it for one more mana seems unnecessary.
Flavour: 9/10 - I really like the flavor behind this card. Since it showcases one of the abilities that Jules used in the strip so far. Well, I guess it showcases both, since she does have 6 attack power. My only grip with the card is I feel like it should be white as well.
Creativity: 2/5 - At lot like Bladewing the Risen.
Quality: 3.5/5 - There are some slight formating issues (no space after "Jules," in the title, extra space before the "When") but other than that and the set symbol, it looks good.

Balance: 8/10 - The poisonous ability really clashes with the flip ability. It seems like you would never give them poison counters because you would always be looking to get your 3/6 double stricker instead. I do think the card is balanced, however.
Flavour: 6/10 - I really like the art. However, the abilities seem to be all over the place. I'm also not sure why Jules is Blue. I understand this card was made before the fire scene in comic #51, but even up until that point Jules was not really acting 'blue.'
Creativity: 3/5 - Well, I can't say I have ever seen a card like this before. But, the abilities are not unique, so I will give you slightly above average.
Quality: 4.5/5 - There are one or two small issues, "provoke" should not capitalized, the p/t box is missing a side. I do like your set symbol.

Balance: 8/10 - As charms go, its pretty good. Basically you can help one of your creatures or kill one of theirs. I have a feeling you would be using the 1st ability the most. The 3rd ability is the most narrow, but since it's the 3rd ability on a charm, and the other two are quite useful, it's forgivable.
Flavour: 9/10 - I think the flavor here is spot on for the abilities. I do like the abilities and I think it was a good way to get the flavor of Jules across without making a creature card. I also like your choice of colors. I do wish this card had some flavor text.
Creativity: 2.5/5 - Nothing really that new. Seems like a standard charm to me. Average.
Quality: 3.5/5 - I feel like it really could use some flavor text, and I'm still not a fan of that set symbol.

Balance: 8/10 - It's like Figure of Destiny. I feel like you will only be casting this card on turn 5, but you could cast it turn three and use it turn four. I feel this version of the card is more balanced than the last. Having her start as a 1/1 is a creative way to balance it.
Flavour: 8.5/10 - I really like the flavor of her starting out as a human and turning into an angel. I still have the same complaints about the blue vs red ability I had with your other version of this card.
Creativity: 3/5 - I'm giving you a 3. It looks like something I have never seen before, but I feel like I have... somewhere....
Quality: 4/5 - Only issue is that set symbol.
